Tarnish happens when the metal under the plating reacts with moisture, sulphur in the air and chemicals from skin products. You can slow it down dramatically with a few habits.
The golden rule: last on, first off
Spray perfume and apply lotion first, then wait a minute before putting on jewelry. Take it off before bathing, swimming, cooking or working out.
Wipe after every wear
A quick wipe with a soft microfibre cloth removes sweat and oils before they can react with the plating.
Store it airtight
Keep each piece in its own pouch or a small zip bag with the air pressed out. Add a silica gel sachet during the monsoon.
What not to do
- Don't use toothpaste, baking soda or silver dips on plated jewelry — they strip the plating.
- Don't store jewelry in the bathroom.
