Fashion jewelry stays beautiful for years with a few simple habits. Here's how to wear, clean, store and travel with your pieces.

Last on, first off

Put jewelry on after make-up, perfume, hair spray and lotion have dried, and take it off before you wash your face, shower, swim, work out or sleep.

Water, sweat and humidity speed up tarnish. If a piece gets wet, pat it dry with a soft cloth straight away and let it air-dry before storing.

Wipe with a soft, dry microfibre or cotton cloth after every wear.
Never use toothpaste, baking soda, silver dip or ultrasonic cleaners on plated jewelry — they remove the plating.
For stones, use a soft dry make-up brush to remove dust from the setting.

Store each piece separately in its pouch or a small zip-lock bag with the air pressed out to slow down oxidation.
Keep pouches in a cool, dry drawer away from sunlight. Add a silica gel sachet in humid months.
Hang or lay necklaces flat to prevent tangles; close clasps before storing.

Use a padded jewelry roll or a pill organiser for studs and rings, and keep valuables in your carry-on bag.
